ERMD Student Award

The ERMD Student Award recognizes a student who is especially interested in pursuing a career as an information professional dealing with environment and resource management issues. The award is $500.00, plus a $750 reimbursement award if the student comes to the SLA annual meeting in New Orleans. The student must be enrolled in an ALA accredited master's degree program. This award is meant to promote both current and future involvement in and commitment to the library and information science profession prior to, during, and after the master's program.

To be considered for the award, a student must be an SLA member and write a 300-500 word essay describing his or her interest in the issues facing information professionals in the environment and natural resources fields. Essays should be labeled with the student's name, contact information, and educational institution. Deadline for receiving submissions is March 15, 2010. The award will be presented at the SLA Annual Conference in June. The winner is encouraged, but not required, to attend the annual conference.

Jean Outland Chrysler Library Cataloging Fellowship

The Jean Outland Chrysler Library Cataloging Fellowship is open to graduate students in good standing in a library science, information studies, preservation, archives or related program. You must have experience in technical services and cataloging or have significant coursework in relevant areas, have knowledge of MARC, LCSH, AACR2 and DDC. Also, you must have familiarity with art history research materials, demonstrate good computer skills and familiarity with searching bibliographic database, and be detail oriented, organized and flexible with the ability to work independently to be eligible for this award. Cataloging Fellows will have the opportunity to work on a variety of cataloging and technical services projects within the library. Applicants must be able to commit to 10 consecutive weeks of employment.

University Libraries Student Book Collecting Contest, 2010

Entries are invited from students currently enrolled at the University of South Carolina for the University Libraries Student Book Collecting Award, carrying a first prize of $250. The award is sponsored by the Thomas Cooper Society, which initiated it in 1993 to encourage beginning book collectors. A list of previous winners and the topics of their collections is available at:

The collection may be in any field or may emphasize some particular area of interest within a subject. Collections may illustrate a certain bibliographical feature such as edition, illustration, typography, binding, &tc. Books and printed documents in all formats are acceptable for submission.

Materials submitted by entrants must be owned and have been collected primarily by them. Entries should be submitted by March 31, 2010 and should include the following:

a) A brief essay (2-3 pages, double-spaced) describing how and why the collection was assembled and its plans for future growth and development.

b) An annotated bibliography of selected titles (about 25-40) from the collection.

c) A cover sheet listing the entrant’s name, address, phone and email contacts.

N.B.: The entrant’s name should not appear anywhere on the entry except on the cover sheet. If submitting electronically, please try to send as PDF files to retain all original formatting. Entrants may wish to look over a previous successful entry to get ideas on arranging their material: a folder of such entries is on hold in the Rare Books and Special Collections reading room.

A panel of three judges will evaluate the anonymous entries. Each entrant’s essay and bibliography will be evaluated on how well they illustrate the concept of the collection. The discussion of the collection’s strengths and goals should reflect some planning and knowledge of the field. The winner will be asked to exhibit selected items in Thomas Cooper Library in April-May 2010. The winning entry will also be submitted to the National Collegiate Book Collecting Contest, co-sponsored by the Rare Books and Special Collections Division and Center for the Book at the Library of Congress, the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America, and the Fellowship of American Bibliophilic Societies. The university’s 2007 winner was a runner-up in the national contest.

Are you thinking of a career in a public library? Would you like some general experience and exposure to a recognized public library system?

Volunteers at our information desk greet and offer assistance to our Main library patrons and visitors. Some of their responsibilities include providing customer service support to patrons using the express computers located behind the information desk, answering general information questions about the library, directing patrons to meeting rooms and other areas of the library, and searching for books by title and author at the request of patrons.

This is an excellent volunteer position for an outgoing individual who enjoys working with the public and has excellent customer service skills. Positions are available on alternate Wednesday mornings from 9-12 and alternate Sunday afternoons from 3-6 p.m. This position does require orientation training and a minimum volunteer commitment of six months.

Minority Fellowship

Middle Tennessee State University announces the availability of an Underrepresented Minority Dissertation Fellowship. The purpose of the University’s fellowship program is to enhance diversity in research, teaching, and service at MTSU through the recruitment of underrepresented minority students from across the country who are completing dissertation research.

The Library Fellow will provide service in the award winning James E. Walker Library within an area related to his or her academic preparation and the needs of the Library. The Fellow will be expected to devote significant time to the completion of the dissertation. The Library Fellow will also work with a library faculty mentor and will be involved with co-curricular activities including the University’s cultural diversity initiatives.

The BRASS Gale/Cengage Student Travel award is a $1000 cash award given to a student enrolled in an ALA accredited master's degree program to fund travel to and attendance at the ALA Annual Conference and a one-year membership in the Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS) of RUSA. Applicants should have demonstrated interest in a career as a business reference librarian, and a potential to be a leader in the profession as demonstrated by activities that may include (but are not limited to) coursework, internships, jobs, special projects, and publications.

I'm writing to share information with you about the British Studies Program offered by The University of Southern Mississippi and consortium partners, and to ask for your help in providing information about this program to students who may be interested. If appropriate, would you please pass along the following information to members of the organization you advise?

In July 2010 students will once again have the opportunity to study library science in London through a four-week course offered by the British Studies Program. For details on the program visit

The program is offered July 1 – August 1, 2010. Each of the 20 courses offered carries six hours of undergraduate or graduate credit from The University of Southern Mississippi, a fully-accredited institution of higher learning. Southern Miss offers the program through a consortium of 14 U.S. colleges and universities, and each year 150-200 students from across the U.S. take part in British Studies. Credit is transferable; we recommend you check with your home institution regarding its policies for credit transfer.

Students participating in the library science course will learn about famous authors and collections. Distinguished British scholars and lecturers will provide instruction as well as guided tours of a variety of British libraries, museums, and archives. Students will accompany instructors to sites such as Oxford and Stratford, and explore sites of interest on their own. A historic recreation of the Globe Theater is within walking distance on the south bank of the Thames and you may purchase tickets to a Shakespeare production.

The British Studies Program stays in central London at King's College in one of their dormitories. The rooms are small, but everyone gets a private room with fridge and private bath. Everyone has access to a shared kitchen and the dorm has a large courtyard which serves as a social center of the program. Participants quickly make friends with the students in their class as well as students from across the country.

The dorm is on Stamford Street, approximately a hundred yards from Waterloo Station. The central location puts you just a few minutes' walk from Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, and the theater district. Most people walk when they're headed to central London because it's so close.

The cost for the program is $5,799 for undergraduates and $5,999 for graduates. This price includes tuition, air travel, housing, and academic travel, including a four-day trip outside London to places such as Edinburgh, Paris, Normandy, and Brussels. Qualified students can usually get financial aid just as if this were a course you were taking in the U.S. You apply through your local financial aid office. The International Programs office at Southern Miss is more than happy to provide you with information and assistance regarding financial aid and credit transfer.
