Call For Submissions

Are you an LIS student interested in activism and the struggle for social justice? Do you stay awake at night thinking about how your politics might inform your professional practice?
The MIRIAM BRAVERMAN MEMORIAL PRIZE, a presentation of the Progressive Librarians Guild (PLG), is awarded awarded each year for the best paper about some aspect of the social responsibilities of librarians, libraries, or librarianship. Papers related to archivists, archives, and archival work are also eligible.

The winning paper will be published in the Summer 2009 issue of Progressive Librarian. The winner of the contest will also receive a $300 stipend to help offset the cost of travel to and from the 2009 American Library Association annual conference in Chicago, IL. The award will be presented at the annual PLG dinner.

Think you might be interested? Here’s the fine print.
  • Contestants must be library and/or information science students attending a graduate-level program in the United States or Canada.
  • Entries must be the original, unpublished work of the contestant, and must be written in English. Entries may not exceed 3,000 words, and must conform to MLA in-text citation style.
  • To facilitate the blind review process, each entry must include a cover sheet providing the contestant’s name, full contact information (address, phone number, e-mail address), name of the institution where the contestant is enrolled, and the title of the paper. No identifying information, other than the title, should appear on the paper itself.
  • Entries must be submitted electronically, in Microsoft Word or RTF format, to bravermansubmissions@gmail.com. Entries must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. CST on May 1, 2009.
  • The $300 stipend is available only to help defray the cost of ALA conference attendance; if the winner of the contest is unable to attend, the money will remain in the Braverman Prize endowment fund and may be donated to a progressive cause at the discretion of the selection committee.

Paid Army Internship

The Department of the Army (DA) is offering a one-year salaried intern position for
a high potential recent graduate of an ALA-accredited Master's Program in Library
and Information Studies. The DA Library Intern Program includes structured work
experience and formal training and leads to permanent placement in the Army
Library system. Highly motivated professionals who have a commitment to public
service are invited to apply. The Program will start in Spring 2009.
Requires U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain a Secret Clearance.


The DA Library Intern Program provides an opportunity to receive

The Library Intern will be based in the Office of the TRADOC Command Librarian at Fort Monroe, VA and will receive work-based training in three libraries at: TRADOC Headquarters Fort Monroe; the Logistics Headquarters, Management College, Fort Lee, VA; and the Transportation School, Fort Eustis, VA. TRADOC supports and builds the Army’s operational fighting forces by recruiting, training and educating the Army’s Soldiers in these schools. The libraries support the academic programs by providing faculty and students with information resources specific to their school’s curriculum.

The Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library

The Haas Family Arts Library at Yale consists of collections from three formerly-separate operating units: Art and Architecture, Arts of the Book, and Drama. Now located under one roof, these libraries support arts-area programming at Yale, including the Schools of Architecture, Art, and Drama, and the department of the History of Art, as well as the teaching and research needs of the Yale community beyond the visual arts. In addition, the Arts Library houses several prominent archival and special collections in Art and Architecture, Arts of the Book, and Drama, ranging from type specimens and woodblocks to theatrical archives to one of the world's foremost collection of books on color.

The Haas Family Arts Library at Yale serves a distinguished array of academic and museum programs, architects, artists and scholars. Kress Fellows have the opportunity to interact routinely with faculty, staff and students in distinguished Schools of Architecture, Art, and Drama; a nationally ranked department of the History of Art; and two outstanding university art museums, the Yale Center for British Art and the Yale University Art Gallery. Position Description

The Yale University Arts Library welcomes applications for the 2009/10 Kress Fellowship in Art Librarianship. The Kress Fellowship is intended for a recent graduate from library school who wishes to pursue a career in art librarianship. This fellowship is made possible through the generosity of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. Through this fellowship, the Kress Foundation seeks to achieve in the field of art librarianship what it has accomplished for art history and art conservation: ensuring the growth of the discipline by promoting the advancement of new professionals.

This year the focus of the Kress Fellowship will be on all aspects of arts special collections including collection management, exhibition development and installation, as well as reference work. During their tenure at Yale Kress Fellows are expected to pursue a mutually agreed-upon project resulting in a publishable paper or a new library service. Kress Fellows are also introduced to a broad spectrum of professional activities beyond special collections and will have the opportunity to perform collection development activities, interact with a variety of special collections and their curators, and participate in the work of library committees and external professional organizations.

The Kress Fellowship is a competitive fellowship. Applicants should submit a current resume, as well as a brief statement of interest, and names of three references, to Amy Burlingame, Human Resources Supervisor and Staffing Representative, at hrlibrary@yale.edu, by Friday, March 21, 2009. The statement of interest is expected to reflect a genuine commitment to art librarianship and an interest in the provision of information services to the visual arts community. There is no application form. A committee of Yale librarians will review submissions. The Kress Fellow will be in residence at Yale for eight months, and will receive an award of $30,000, prorated over the fellowship term. Health insurance will be provided.

ICOMM week event: Tywanna Whorley presentation on Dr. King papers - April 2

As part of I-COMM Week, March 30 - April 3, Dr. Tywanna Whorley, Processing Archivist of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Archive at Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center at Boston University will be giving a presentation about her work with the Dr. King papers.

Presentation title: The Measure of a Man: Redefining Martin Luther King, Jr. through His Papers

Professor Whorley has taught archival access and advocacy, and management of records and information resources in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Simmons College in Boston, MA. Her research interests focus on governmental and state archives and the relationships between access, privacy and collective memory. Her most recent essay, entitled "The Tuskegee Syphilis Study: Access & Control Over Controversial Records," was published in the edited volume Political Pressure & the Archival Record.

DC Internship

Description: The Independent Community Bankers of America Library seeks an intern. This unpaid internship in ICBA’s Washington D.C. office provides a unique opportunity for an MLS student to gain experience in a variety of facets of special librarianship including cataloging, collection & product development, and some basic reference. The Library serves ICBA association and subsidiary staff and nearly 5,000 members in the area of banking and financial services, including regulation and legislation as well as bank operations.

We will soon be uploading records from a cataloging outsourcer to the InMagic Library catalog. We are looking for a tech-savvy, creative, hardworking individual to assist in this solo librarian workplace.

The intern will have the opportunity to contribute to several projects, including:
Cataloguing Association publications, testimony and comment letters.
Assisting with uploading of cataloged items to InMagic database
Developing information packets for members.

Qualifications: Enrollment in an MLS degree program preferred. Academic background or interest in business and/or finance and banking preferred. Basic knowledge of cataloging standards helpful, but not required. Excellent organizational, communication, and writing skills and the ability to work independently are required.

Schedule & Salary: This position is an unpaid learning opportunity. The schedule is flexible depending upon the student’s course schedule and the requirements of the student’s university.
