Charleston volunteer opportunity

The Citadel's library will experience a renovation this spring/summer. In preparation we will need to shift pretty much the entire collection. I'm just starting to look at options for getting 10-20 people who don't mind handling books to help for a short time (2-5 days). We’ll be starting to shift the 1st floor collection very soon (maybe this week). We are scheduled to have empty ranges/shelving units taken down on April 20, so I’m looking at the first 2 weeks in April to shift the 2nd floor. Possibly the end of March, and if students would rather come individually, as convenient for them, afternoons and evenings are best. Weekends (especially Sunday afternoons/evenings) are possible with a little more planning.

She is looking for volunteers with any level of familiarity with Library of Congress classification system. This is a great chance to become familiar with the LC system and help out a fellow library!

Conable Scholarship

CHICAGO - The Freedom to Read Foundation (FTRF) has opened applications for the 2009 Gordon M. Conable Conference Scholarship, which will enable a library school student or new professional to attend ALA’s 2009 Annual Conference.
The scholarship’s goal is to advance two principles that Conable held dear: intellectual freedom and mentorship. The 2009 ALA Annual Conference will be held July 9–15 in Chicago.
It provides for conference registration, transportation, housing for six nights and six days per diem. In return, the recipient will be expected to attend various FTRF and other intellectual freedom meetings and programs at conference, consult with a mentor/board member and present a report about his or her experiences. The 2009 Conable Scholarship recipient also will attend the Freedom to Read Foundation’s 40th Anniversary Gala, scheduled for Sunday, July 12 at the new Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago.
The deadline for submitting an application for the 2009 Conable Scholarship is Friday, March 20; the award will be announced in April.
Students currently enrolled in a library and information studies degree program and new professionals (those who have worked in librarianship for three years or less) are eligible to receive the Conable Scholarship. Those interested must submit an application that includes two references and an essay detailing their interest in intellectual freedom issues. Applica nts also are asked to attach a résumé, particularly those who are working professionals. If the recipient is already registered for ALA’s Annual Conference, he or she will have the conference fee refunded.

Gordon Conable was a California librarian and intellectual freedom champion who served several terms as president of the Freedom to Read Foundation He was executive vice president for public libraries at Library Systems and Services (LSSI) in Riverside, Calif., and was responsible for management and performance of LSSI’s public library contracts, including the 30-branch Riverside County, Calif., system. He also served as director of the Monroe County (Mich.) Library System from 1988–1998. During his tenure there, he withstood an intense controversy over Madonna's book “Sex.” Before that he was associate director of the Fort Vancouver Regional Library in Washington. For his efforts, Conable received the Freedom to Read Foundation20Roll of Honor Award and the John Phillip Immroth Memorial Award for “intellectual freedom fighters.” In 1994 he was the first librarian recognized as Michigan’s Public Administrator of the Year.

Please Note: Internships are UNPAID and structured to last approximately 12 weeks for a minimum of 21 hours/week (3 full days). Resume and cover letter are required for application. Internship Description: The Library provides video and information research to support CNN's Washington DC Bureau. It functions as both a video archive and a research library.
The library internship will be filled with a student pursuing a Master of Library Science (MLS) degree. The internship will provide a great opportunity to learn various aspects of librarianship and television production in CNN's fast-paced library. In the CNN library internship, interns will:

* Learn how to complete information requests for library patrons through internet and database research.
* Learn how to complete video requests for library patrons by searching the library’s catalog.
* Create library records for archived tapes and appropriately index the records for
future retrieval.
* Contribute ideas and compile content for the DC Bureau's Library intranet site.
* Develop an instructional classes for the bureau.
* Create research guides and pathfinders to market the library’s resources.

Qualifications: In order to facilitate the learning experience, the following qualifications are preferred. Candidates should have an interest in variety of areas including news librarianship and research and should be an organized self-starter. Interns should have the ability to make decisions, and accept others decisions, and be able to work well with a team of librarians and fellow interns.

Internship at the U.S. General Services Administration

The GSA is offering a few paid summer internships. Below are some of the basic duties. You can also learn more or apply by this February 27, 2009 through USAjobs.gov.
  • Works under the supervision and guidance of a high-level program official who provides continuing guidance and instruction and reviews completed work to insure adequacy and accuracy of conclusions.

  • Performs special assignments designed to familiarize the intern with the scope and mechanics of an important and complex GSA program and with its relationship to other governmental and private organizations. These assignments are also designed to permit the intern to make a positive contribution to the management and administration of the program area.

  • Individual assignments may vary, but most are "problem solving" oriented and require well developed abilities in fact-finding, research, analysis, and written and verbal communication.

  • Assignments typically involve research into problem areas of the work program and participation in development of background information for use in
    determining alternative approaches to solution of problems. They often
    involve performing research for replies to top-level correspondence from
    Members of Congress, important officials from other Government agencies,
    leaders in business and industry and the general public. Assignments are
    sometimes sensitive or confidential in nature and normally require
    contacts with top-level officials of GSA and other federal agencies.

The Library of Congress Junior Fellows Summer Intern program offers undergraduate and graduate students insights into the environment and culture of
the world's largest and most comprehensive repository of human knowledge.
Working with the staff, curators, and the incomparable collections of the Library of Congress, interns will be exposed to a broad spectrum of library work: preservation, reference, access standards, information management, the U. S. copyright system and gift collections.

No previous experience is necessary, but internships are competitive and special relevant skills are desirable. Selection will be based on academic achievement, letters of recommendation, and in most cases an interview with a selection official.

The Roger K. Summit Scholarship, awarded annually by Dialog, was established to honor Dr. Roger K. Summit, the founder of Dialog, for his outstanding contributions to the field of information science.
The scholarship recipient, who must have demonstrated outstanding interest or performance in electronic information services, is selected based upon the following criteria:

2009 Run for Books to be Held in Columbia

The South Carolina Book Festival is sponsoring an 8K Run and 4K Walk to be held Saturday February 21 in Columbia. Both the run & walk start at the South Carolina State Library at 1500 Senate Street and head eastward to Laurens Street, then right onto Greene Street, right onto Barnwell Street, left onto Pendleton, and right onto Greene Street through the University of South Carolina and the Thomas Cooper Library, and right onto Lower Main Street and back to finish at the South Carolina State Library on Senate Street. The Run is a double 8K loop and the walk is a single 4K loop. This scenic route has slight rolling hills and well manicured terrain through USC’s and Columbia’s library area. Each participant will receive a Run for Books T-shirt.

Interesting article on traveling librarianship

The introduction to a recent article AALL spectrum:

"In recent years, the local judicial branch law libraries in Colorado were
discontinued. The reasons for this varied. First, the libraries were expensive to maintain, and the courts lacked the professional staff to manage them. Second, the courts needed the space that the libraries occupied for courtrooms, conference rooms, and office space. Third, and most importantly, the courts acknowledged the reality that most users were turning to online resources to answer their legal research questions. However, this approach created problems.

First, online resources could not answer all of the research questions confronting the judiciary. In particular, they lacked resources to answer the more difficult questions that required the depth and breadth provided by treatises. Second, many users needed training to formulate the more sophisticated queries to locate relevant authority. To address the shortcomings of this environment, the Colorado Supreme Court Law Library created the Traveling Librarian Program."

Second Life opportunity

Behind an avatar, there is a librarian. This is one of the new trends in the provision of virtual reference services (VRS). If you are interested in gaining experience providing VRS in a virtual reality (VR) environment, don’t miss this great opportunity to become a volunteer reference librarian. Regular and distance education (DE) students in the MLIS program and recent SLIS graduates are welcome to volunteer.


Since June 2007 the SLIS has been working on an ongoing project, the development of a virtual instructional facility in the Second Life (SL) world. The SLIS Second Life project team has designed and built a simulated research and practicum facility in the SL World, the SLIS/USC Davis 2.0 Reference Center (http://students.libsci.sc.edu/secondlife/). The purposes of this Center are to: 1) serve as an LIS instructional aid; 2) connect on-campus and DE students in a virtual community; and 3) create a social network to connect information professionals and alums with current LIS students. The Davis 2.0 Reference Center has several components: a library (including a reference department and a multimedia classroom with a capacity for 20 students online at the same time), a Zen garden, an auditorium, and a commons. This simulated virtual facility helps students adapt Web technology into practice.


The SLIS/USC Davis 2.0 Reference Center will be open for public access very soon. As the SLIS Second Life Team Leader and Faculty Advisor, I would like to recruit volunteers to staff reference services in the Davis 2.0 Reference Center. Two types will be provided: general reference services and consumer health information services (which will be available for a limited time only).


At the beginning stage of the services, the target users will the SLIS students and residents in the SL world. While on a Reference Desk shift, staff members will maintain a visible and approachable presence at the Reference Desk. Exceptions may include such activities as assisting users away from the desk, roving during downtime to inquire proactively whether any user needs assistance, and taking a break during longer reference shifts.


Volunteers will receive training on accessing and navigating in the SL world, the use of multimedia resources for the provision of services, and how to provide appropriate VRS in the SL world.
