For Distance Ed Students: Please Have A Look See At The LISSA Forum

This is a message for the Distance Ed students. The LISSA Forum has several state-specific message boards to allow discussion with fellow students in your area. A lot of people have told us it can be a little lonely out there, and we are hoping that the Forum will hope build connections among distance ed students in specific states and just connect everyone in the program across the board.

Carol Price is attempting to start a Virginia cohort on the Forum, and we know from various e-mails that other students are interested in doing the same. You can find Carol's message here

Lubuto Library Project Update

The Lubuto Library Project is a non-profit organization that builds libraries in African, mainly for street children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. LISSA has been working with the Lubuto Library Project for the past year; and Jane Meyers, the president, sent me their latest newsletter recently. Also, I just learned that Lubuto has a Facebook account, which you can reach by clicking here.

Jane is currently in Zambia, and we wish her the best. I encourage you to learn more about Lubuto. They are currently working on a database to manage donation requests made and received. If databases are your cup of tea and you would like to get involved, please feel free to contact Lubuto (you can reach their contact page with all relevant information by clicking here).

Please feel free to share this information with anyone you think might be interested in it as well. LISSA will be volunteering with Lubuto again as soon as Jane gets back from Zambia.

ILSSA (the Information and Library Science Student Association at the School of Information and Library Science at UNC Chapel Hill) Says Hello


This is Travis. I was recently contacted by Anne Fleming, from ILSSA (Information and Library Science Student Association) at the School of Information and Library Science and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Haiti Service Project

This is Travis. LISSA is working with Drusilla Carter to help a school in Haiti. We have worked to help produce a card catalog for the school's library, but it has been requested that we help the children at the school with a few necessities.

For the next school year, LISSA will have a collection box in Davis Room 110. I will periodically drop off requested items to Drusilla or she will pick them up when she is in town..

Here is what has been requested:

  • Boys Underwear (new) -- all sizes
  • Socks (new) -- all sizes
  • Blue Ink Pins
  • Scarfs or Bandannas
  • Hair Ribbons (or any hair pins, ornaments)
  • Matchbox cars
The box in 110 will be under the table to the left as you walk in the room. It has a been clearly labeled.

These kids haven't had too many breaks in life. If sometime from now to the next school year you can drop some of these items off, it would be very much appreciated.

When I first put this message out on the listservs this summer, a number of distance ed students asked me if they could send money. Check donations can be made to either:

  • "St. Mary's Episcopal Church" (for education sponsorship donations, to give money to pay for the kids to go to the school)
  • PLEASE NOTE: Donors should write "Haiti Children's Education Fund" in the memo section of the check.
  • "Mission Aviation Fellowship" (to by supplies for the school, whatever is most needed)

Celebrating National Children’s Animated Book Week Nov. 13th - 14th

This year the College of Mass Communications and Information Studies is celebrating:

National Children’s ANIMATED Book Week

On November 13 and 14 2007 a two-day animation seminar will be offered

with kids and adults working together to tell amazing stories and

learning animation principles. The seminar will be conducted by JOE


The program will draw together elementary school students, students in

the School of Journalism and Mass Communications and the School of

Library and Information Science to develop story-telling automation


Joe Summerhays visited the campus last year during I-Comm Week and made

a presentation to the visual communications students. Here are some

LISSA is looking for SLIS students to run for office

LISSA is looking for SLIS students to run for office in the Fall 2007 LISSA election that will be held this October.

Not only is being an officer in LISSA a great way to get more involved in leadership roles at SLIS, but it looks great on a resume.

Please consider running for one of the following open positions: President, Vice President, and Treasurer (scroll to the bottom of this message to view the roles and responsibilities of each position).

A) The president shall preside at all LISSA functions, head the Executive Committee, and have the authority to appoint all committee chairpersons and to create new committees. The President shall also provide leadership and act as chief spokesperson for the organization.

The Treasurer shall handle all financial transactions of LISSA, including, but not restricted to: the collection of dues; managing all bank accounts; and recording all transactions in the appropriate books.

A lot of you may already know about this, since it's apparently been around almost a year (I really should learn to read the dates on blog posts when I look at them...), but if not it seems like a neat tool to browse through what other people are saying in the wacky woild of library 2.0.

Of course, this is also a great way for those of us LIS students who have library-related blogs to get our names out there, at least a little bit.

For Archival Students--Volunteer opportunity in Museums

Dear Archives Students - I know most of you are concentrating on archival volunteering, but in case any of you are also thinking about careers in museums, and are interested in the difference between collections management of objects and of documents, one of the Public History students in the Museum track has sent out the following inquiry: (respond directly to her)


Hey Everyone -- My name is Jan Levinson and I am in my second year of the Public History program here at USC. I am in the early stages of setting up a new volunteer organization which would work to benefit museums in the Columbia area. After reading the below information, please email me at if you would be interested in participating in this volunteer group. Keep in mind our first project would likely happen in early Spring of 2008.

This would be a volunteer group for graduate students with any interest in museum and collections management. The goal of this group would be to supply extra hands to Columbia-area museums for collections-based projects. The idea would be to set-up a 1-2 day project every few months at a local museum; the project might be something like conducting an inventory of collections in storage, digital photography of collections, re-housing, etc. Either a project that the museum has started and could use a boost of man(or woman)-power to finish up, or a small-scale project that could be accomplished using 5-10 volunteers for a day.

I would act as the coordinator for the group, contacting museums to discuss project descriptions/timelines; the students would be those who are interested in gaining or enhancing their collections experience, but all would be graduate students with an interest in museums and with at least some previous collections experience.

A registrar/collections manager from the local area would be on-hand to supervise our day-long project (if the institution where we are volunteering does not have a full time collections person; otherwise, the professional employee at that museum would supervise). I envision the day beginning with an explanation from the museum professional to the group on how to accomplish the task at hand (ex. quick lesson on condition reporting with examples, demonstration of the proper way to handle or photograph objects). In the end, this would provide the students with membership in a volunteer organization and hands-on collections experience, and the hosting institution with some extra hands to help accomplish a set goal.

In the end, this is a learning experience, and all the activities won't involve direct handling of collections -- the activities of each project will be at the discretion of the hosting institution and their professional staff. But in the end, the activities of these projects will involve collections and participation by the volunteers will result in an enhanced knowledge of proper museum practices that will benefit the student in his/her later internships/professional careers. Basically, like a very short-term internship (hard labor + experience = increased collections knowledge, enhanced resume, & warm fuzzy feeling that comes from helping non-profits!)

Ideally, if this takes off, then we could gather volunteers and set up a calender of projects at local institutions (a 1-2 day-long project every 2-3 months; goal of helping 3 institutions a year). This is an initiative that hopefully will have a long lifespan and will be continued from year to year here in Columbia. I have contacted several collections managers in our local area and many seem excited about this opportunity!

The Archival Students Guild, a student group dedicated to all things archives, will host its first meeting of the Fall 2007 semester on Tuesday, September 25th at 6:30 p.m. in Davis 216.

We will be electing officers for the year, discussing possible upcoming events, and welcoming all the new members. One lucky person will also leave with the highly sought after (yet rarely attained) "Archivists Make It Last Longer" bumper sticker.

Everyone is welcome to attend. There are no membership fees or no real requirements to join - only an interest in archives.

Intellectual Freedom and Banned Books Week 2006 (Sept. 29th to Oct. 6th)

Banned Books Week 2006 is from Saturday, Sept. 29th to Saturday Oct. 6th.

Intellectual Freedom (I prefer to say the Freedom to Learn or the Freedom to Read) is a big issue these days, right up there with privacy and the Patriot Act. We thought that this might be a topic SLIS students would like to discuss in detail, to share their ideas and opinions.

That is why we are trying an experiment on the LISSA Forum.

If you haven't tried the forum yet, it is a series of message boards divided into different groups by topic. (To post to the Forum, you register like when you sign up for an e-mail service like hotmail or g-mail, so it is very easy to use. To just read, you can stay automatically logged in as a guest.)

On the Forum, under the "General Discussion Tread," we have started a posting for the "Freedom to Read." Please post your thoughts on Intellectual Freedom / The Freedom to Read here. This is an experiment to see how well the LISSA Forum works as a means of discussion for all SLIS students, whether Distance Ed or otherwise.

It is also an opportunity to discuss with other SLIS students a very important topic. We are also making a competition out of it. Under the "Freedom to Read," we have placed the names of the books on ALA's 10 Most Challenged Books of 2006 list.

If you have read any of these books, please post your feelings and thoughts about them under their respective posting: if you thought they were any good or not, if you would recommend it or not, even just if you would like your library to have it in their collection. If you haven't read any of them but you'd like to see what books have been challenged, give one or two of the books a try.

Either way, please rate the book on a scale from 1 (terrible, can't believe that got published) to 10 (fantastic, best thing ever). The three books that have the highest average scores by the end of the semester, LISSA will buy one copy of each and give them to a library in need.

This is a chance to have your say on a very important discussion in the profession, and to have a little fun while learning more about the new ways students have to communicate with one another. The only thing we ask is that we are adults and respectful of everyone's thoughts and feelings.

WNBA Eastman Grant


Publishing grant for librarians is available

The Women's National Book Association sponsors the WNBA Eastman Grant, which is available for librarians who are interested in learning about the relationship between the library and publishing professions.

The WNBA offers a grant of up to $750 for a librarian to take a course or participate in an institute devoted to aspects of publishing as a profession. The grant may also provide reimbursement for such study completed within the past year.

The grant honors Ann Heidbreder Eastman, who was an active and prominent member of both the WNBA and the American Library Association (ALA). The grant represents Ann's commitment to education about publishing as well as her support for communication between librarians and publishers.

Librarians holding a master's degree in library science or its equivalent and having at least two years of post-master's work experience in a library may apply. The primary criterion will be the likelihood of career benefit to the person taking the course.

Applications must be received by November 2, 2007.

BRASS Thomson Financial Student Travel Award

BRASS Thompson Financial Student Travel Award

The BRASS Thompson Financial Student Travel Award would like to encourage library school student’s to apply for this year’s award to travel to the American Libraries Association’s annual conference, which will be held in Anaheim, CA June 26-July 2, 2008. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

· The recipient shall have a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career as a business reference librarian and the potential to be a leader in the profession. This may be demonstrated by: course work, internship, practicum, jobs, special projects, publications and related activities.

· The recipient should be a student in an ALA accredited library school.

· The recipient has not been awarded a previous or concurrent ALA sponsored travel award.

· Student must be willing to participate in BRASS activities at the ALA Conference for which the award has been made and write a short statement following the conference on his or her experience to be published in RUSA Update.

Applications for nominations are to be made in writing via email to the Chair of the committee, ( The applicants will be evaluated by the BRASS committee on the basis of their written applications, references, academic merit, and potential for leadership in the profession. stating in detail the contributions of the individual. Applications are due to the Chair by December 1 or the due date as specified of other ALA awards that year.

Presentation of the Award

Formal announcement and presentation of the award shall be made at the BRASS membership meeting at each ALA Annual Conference.

Form and/or Type of Award

· Cash award of $1,000 for travel expenses incurred at the ALA Annual Conference which would include a one-year membership to ALA/RUSA/BRASS if the recipient is not already a member.

· The recipient of the award will be formally invited by the Chair of BRASS to attend BRASS Executive Committee meetings and other BRASS activities.

Dr. Hastings, Tu, and Perrault have very graciously agreed to informally present personal research to SLIS students. The idea is for students to gain a better understanding of the profession, of research, and of how to do presentations. We all hope to learn and have a little fun. Please join us if you can.

LISSA Forum Is Now Up

Thanks to Stewart Baker, the LISSA Forum is now up and running. This is something we have wanted for a long time, because it is our hope that it will offer distance ed students the opportunity to organize better outside of Columbia and to have more ownership of what goes on in LISSA overall.

The Forum is essentially a number of message boards. Topics are arranged into main categories. The two I want to talk quickly are "SLIS Boards" and "Regional Boards."

"SLIS Boards" allows students to discuss topics specific to the branch of LIS they are interested in, such as "Academic Libraries," "Medical Libraries," etc.

"Regional Boards" has threads that are specific to the state various SLIS students are in. There are "Georgia" and "West Virginia" threads for example. This is to allow students in those states a centralized place to discuss classes, LIS topics of interest, or just meet one another so that you don't feel isolated out there. I know a lot of distance ed students would really just like to talk to other students. We hope this will give the opportunity to do so.

There is also a thread to discuss buying and selling books. To get on the forum you will need to register and create a user name, but this is free. It is just like signing up for G-Mail or Hotmail.

Just a reminder, LISSA & ASIS&T have a weekly happy hour Fridays at 6:30. The location changes each week, but the day and time are the same. The location of the bar will be posted to the listservs the day before. Hope you can join us.

Volunteers Needed for Pimp My Bookcart Saturday, September 22nd in Davis College

LISSA will have a social / service event Saturday, September 22nd in Davis College. We will doing Pimp My Bookcart, a competition put on by the Unshelved comic strip. A bookcart is "pimped," like Pimp My Ride on MTV. Winners get a free library book cart. If LISSA wins, we will donate the cart to a library that really needs one. It should be a good time by all.

If you have any ideas for how we should pimp our bookcart, please post them to the LISSA forum. (You may need to sign in after clicking on this link. Volunteers Needed For the South Carolina Library Association (SCLA) Conference in Columbia from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2; Volunteers Attend Free

Volunteers are needed for the South Carolina Library Association (SCLA) Conference in Columbia from Oct. 31st to Nov. 2nd. Volunteers attend free on the day they volunteer. Volunteers Needed for the Read and Romp event at the South Carolina State Museum Sunday, Oct. 7th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm (But Set-Up Starts at 8 am)

Read and Romp will be Sunday, Oct. 7th from 1:00 pm to 4:00pm. For those of you who weren't here this time last year, the Read and Romp is large children's literacy event held at the South Carolina State Museum. Funds raised go to Reach Out and Read, a wonderful literacy initiative for disadvantaged kids. (Please click on the link above for more information.)

It is also a lot of fun. Each both at the Read and Romp is specific to a particular children's book. I was Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk last year, and I also apparently draw a mean Olivia the Pig in a pinch, which isn't too bad for a student on the archive track. Everything that you are asked to do is very straightforward and they answer any questions you might have. Also, this year SCCCBL (the South Carolina Center for Children's Books and Literacy) will have a booth, so we really do want to have a strong SLIS presence.

Volunteers will be needed all day, from 8 in the morning till 1pm for set up and from 1 to 4 for the event proper. You don't have to come the whole day, just volunteer for a certain period of time. You can either help put on signs and things like that (set-up is light work) or you can volunteer at a booth. The booths are each particular to a certain book (say, "Olivia Saves the Circus") -- and come with very specific instructions on what you are expected to do. It is very easy.

Volunteers are needed Thursday, September 13th from 4:30 to 7:30 to usher for an event at the South Carolina Center for Children's Books and Literacy (SCCCBL), located in the South Carolina State Library.
